"Sherpa" means a civil servant or diplomat who undertakes preparatory political work prior to a summit conference or in this case a Supreme Court confirmation. former Sen. Jon Kyl will act in this role.https://twitter.com/DarleneCypser/status/1016382357824139264 …

Technically, Sherpas are an ethnic group (some members of which are known for their guiding abilities on Everest and other Himalayan/mountain peaks).

Yes but there is another long standing use that does not involve the mountain trek,

Isn't a "sherpa" a personal guide through unknown terrain? Used by analogy for SCOTUS nomination process.

Actually Sherpa is derived from the Sherpas who guide climbers up Everest. Therefore Sherpa would be a guide through the process.

Or a Himalayan mountaineer, living in Nepal or Tibet, usually responsible for leading a group of less experienced climbers or hauling their equipment. Sounds pretty much what you said, Kelly O.

Darn. Was hoping Kyl would guide Trump’s SCOTUS nominee to top of Mt. Everest and leave him/her there.

I'd add the derivation from the sherpas who guide people up Everest.
