What‘s something that seems obvious within your profession, but the general public seems to misunderstand?

Y’all are describing the tension between Descriptivism & Prescriptivism wonderfully
-
I really struggled with the idea that descriptivism is ok when I first started taking linguistics classes for ESL certification. I had a hardcore prescriptive grammarian teacher in high school English.
-
Sometimes people feel they were made to learn these prescriptive rules, so others should do. Sometimes it's from a misguided belief that the language is being coarsened by new ways of using it. Sometimes it's a pure class marker / snobbery. Sometimes it's just fear of change.
-
And some of those rules are okay & necessary for clarity. People *should* learn them. People should also learn the importance of evolution & when it’s appropriate to bend or break rules. A grammarian I once worked with always said, “Clarity above all else!”
-
"Clarity over all else" would eliminate puns Oh
-
Language rules are like the edge of a beach: it’s okay to stay within them, it’s okay to go past them, but you must know where they are.
-
that's a nice analogy!
-
I don't care what anybody, especially the British, says, "orientate" is not a word; the correct form of the verb is "orient" you bastards (not the you @-ed in this reply, the general, universal you including every person that has ever used "orientate").

Me being fresh to learning how to use words and sentences. In my mind what your statement I.D.'s sounds like Slang once accepted can change to proper word usage. (I am taking a screen shot for my personal notes to further grow in words)
-
That's correct, "proper" word usage is just the way the people with the military talk.
-
I got a question, How do new just freshly used words get into the dictionary? Or does a word need to be seasoned before being accepted in the dictionary..
-
Every year, the OED's board reviews new terms for inclusion, and they're generally considered the standard.
-
For some areas, it has to appear in academic papers on 3 continents, I believe. First heard of this with regard to "frankenstorm"
-
oh interesting. it sometimes feels like it just needs to show up on twitter but since academics are studying & writing about twitter maybe it’s both
-
I just bet this is how it was done in the time of Geniuses.
-
which, quite clearly, is going on as we speak. you only have to look at the government to see what a stellar bunch we are

Okay. But “architected” is not a verb, dammit! That’s where I draw the line.
-
Never heard that one! But not you mention it, why not? What's the closest verb, design? Seems useful. I'm going to use it this week ;-)
-
it could be even better: architectate :D
-
hey, if we can conversate, we can architectate. and spectate the whole thing while commentating on it.
