RIP to one of the all-time greats, Tommy Lasorda. (I know I’m a day late posting this, but the Internets were kind of busy yesterday.) I met Tommy once, and it was pretty memorable, probably for both of us.... @baseballcrankpic.twitter.com/ZGy0fePHxf

This would’ve been spring of either 1993 or 1994. I was living in Atlanta, the Dodgers were in town to play the Braves. I was walking down Peachtree Street in a group of about six guys. One of the guys said, “Hey look, there’s Tommy Lasorda.”

Tommy was walking down the street, alone, wearing a nice gray suit. He beamed at us and said “How are you guys doing?” Then he stopped, shook all our hands, and chatted baseball with us for 10, maybe 15 minutes, and went on his way.

Sounds pretty ordinary, right? Except that my friends and I looked and smelled really, really bad. We had slept in an alley, on cardboard boxes, the night before. We’d had our morning breakfast at a soup kitchen. We had just left the public library where we had used the bathroom

Now we were heading to another soup kitchen for lunch. We were all homeless (half of us authentically so, the other half, including me, participating in a Holy Week “24 hours on the street” experiential retreat).

I wouldn’t have been surprised if ANYONE, let alone a big celebrity and Hall-of-Famer like Tommy Lasorda, had crossed the street to get away from us, or turned his eyes down as he passed us, or just said a pro forma “Hello” and then hustled away.

But Tommy did none of those things. He was engaging, and welcoming, and warm. He didn’t look at us as filthy or as anything “less.” He shook our hands, and spoke with us as if we were old friends.

With many celebrities, kindness and warmth are just an “act.” But Tommy was authentic. Why would he have had to put on an “act” around a bunch of homeless guys (even if half of us were only “fake” homeless, which he couldn't have possibly known)?

In my brief interaction with him, I learned that Tommy Lasorda was kind. From what I understand, Tommy was ALWAYS like this. RIP coach, and cheers to a long life, well-lived.
