The @MendoSheriff has requested this inquest, he is also the coroner. He says his hope is to get a clearer understanding of the Hart family cause of death and what happened during the drive from Clark County, WA to Mendocino County, CA last year. #LiveOnK2

Hearing officer is going through protocols and how this inquest will work. 14 jurors have been selected for this inquest. A list of witnesses, mostly law enforcement, will be called over the next two days. The hope is to bring together all of the pieces of this case.

Witnesses from Washington and California are both in attendance. The hearing officer says they plan to talk about everything that happened before leaving, during the drive and after the Hart Family's van went off the cliff.

Jurors are tasked with deciding the "cause of deaths" for each member of the Hart Family. In CA, there are only 4 possibilities: Natural causes, accident, suicide, at the hands of another. They will not determine if there is civil or criminal responsibility.

First witness now being called in Hart Family coroner's inquest, Officer Michael Covington with the California Highway Patrol, he has been an officer for four years.

Officer now recounting first being called to the area where the Hart Family's vehicle went over the cliff. "We were told by fire personnel they had been down to where the vehicle was, it was knee deep water" by the time he went down there he says the water was too deep to pass.

Officer testifying that they had to repel down the side of the cliff. They ultimately used a helicopter to get three of the family members out of the car. Due to positioning, getting the two others in the car was difficult.

As the van was being towed from the bottom of the cliff up, the driver and passenger were still in the car however, the driver (Jennifer) fell out but the passenger (Sarah) was still in the vehicle.

Officer testified that nothing seemed out of the ordinary at the crash site, meaning there were no skid marks where the vehicle went off the cliff.

Officer Annabell Sanchez now recounting what she remembers from arriving on the scene. At this point we aren't learning much that is new, going over the basics. They are now taking a break, their plan is to take a break every hour, they will be back at 10:05.

Back on the record for at least another hour. Calling Mendocino County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Julian, he also responded to the Hart Family crash site. He works with the coroner department, says it was clear everyone in the car was dead.

Deputy made contact with individuals who found human remains along the beach about two weeks after the crash. Those remains were identified as Ciera Hart.

At that point 6 family members were identified and found, 2 were still missing. They believed 8 members of the Hart family were in the car at the time of the crash.

Jared Chaney as Search and Rescue Coordinator for the

Search 6 was just after remains of Ciera Hart were found. They focused more on that area. A month later, Hannah's remains were found in an area that search crews had looked in 5 different times.

Hannah Harts foot was found by a person's K-9 who wouldn't leave the pair of pants and shoes alone. It wasn't until later that they realized there were human remains in the shoe.

Dr. Pizarro now discussing autopsy of Jennifer Hart. Cannot determine time of death. Her cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries, especially neck and right chest due to motor vehicle rollover. She had a significant amount of ethanol in her blood.

Now moving on to Sarah Hart's autopsy. She was pinned between the seats and the roof. Dr. Pizarro believes she was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.

Dr. Pizarro now testifying the Sarah had Benedryl in her system. He says "her level of benedryl is pretty high." It was NOT the cause of death but says the amount she had in her system could have been toxic.

Coroner's inquest into the Hart Family crash has started again. Dr. Pizarro back on the stand, he says 19yo Marcus Hart death was caused by trauma to the neck. He also says Marcus had a significant amount of benedryl in his system.

Dr. Pizarro: 14-year-old Abigail Hart weighed just 82lbs at the time of the autopsy. She had lacerations to her face, and did not appear to be wearing a seat belt. She too died from trauma to the neck.
