Dr. Keisha N. Blain Retweeted SHEAR

This is a weak statement. And I note that the letter does not directly apologize for the racial slurs; or address the disrespect of women scholars & junior scholars. In many ways, the letter reveals a lot about how we got here in the first place.https://twitter.com/SHEARites/status/1284616218486472706 …

This line tells you everything you need to know about the people or persons who crafted this letter: "I do not wish to silence voices w/ whom I personally disagree." This is the same logic that justifies allowing hate speech on college campuses. It's the "middle ground" approach.

But there can be no "middle ground" when it comes to racism. And while the organization claims to desire to be an "anti-racist" organization (the new buzz word these days!), it is not possible when one makes space for racism under the guise of open dialogue.

I am not a member of this organization and will never be. But as an observer, I think it's very unfortunate. And it's a bit sad that it took all day to release such a weak letter.

It's so frustrating when people try to frame racist views as a matter of different opinions. It's not merely a difference of opinion. It's the kind of thinking that should be vigorously rejected. And I do mean vigorously. Anyhow, it's not my battle to fight. Just my two cents.

Sorry for typos in my tweets! I meant "person or persons" but hopefully that was clear. Now going back to minding my own business (at least I will try!).

There was an essay a little while back (and, of course, I don't have the link) that made the point that fascism is not something you argue, it is something you *fight*. Racism and fascism being glove and hand, the analogy seems to carry over.

You’re exactly right. It’s a weak statement, and throwing together a hastily constructed, “anti-racist and inclusive” follow-up panel in a few weeks is too little, too late.
