In the recent discussion of the viciously misogynistic Incel culture no one seems to have made the link to Human Capital theory. Gary Becker is quite explicit in The Marriage Market that Human Capital theory be applied to romantic relationships…

He says, "since many men and women compete as they seek mates, a market in marriages can be presumed to exist. Each person tries to find the best mate, subject to the restrictions imposed by market conditions.” It’s a cold, loveless conception of life...

Most journalists have taken the “involuntary” element of involuntary celibacy at face value but those who know the scene are clear, it’s not that these men are unable to have any sex at all but that they are unable to have sex with the 'high value’ women they think they deserve…

‘High value’ women just made me feel sick. Maybe men need to stop ascribing value to women in this way, & assume they get part of this value based on their proximity & access to them?

It’s fucking disgusting language but is how Incel’s discuss women. In fact, it was a phrase used by one of the previous Incel terrorists. But it’s also implicit in Becker’s ideas. How can you have a market in women without assigning differential values to them.

Yep, their language of entitlement is grim. Does Becker assume we are all players in this market, with equal power?

I imagine he’d say that tastes, etc. are given and take place outside the frame of analysis. That’s the usual way historical and socially created inequalities are naturalised in this kind of thinking.

I’d prefer to just call this out as misogyny & toxic masculinity tbh. Assuming entitlement to women & expectation they should be sexually available to them.

It certainly is about toxic masculinity and a backlash against feminism. I suppose I’m interested in why misogyny is taking these specific forms at this particular moment in history.

I think it’s taken these forms for a very very long time. We just see it more widely available to read cos internet.
