My book on startup sales now has its own website for founders, sales staff, and investors to learn from and refer to at the appropriate stage of their businesses:

"Hiring, while of extreme importance, can be a time suck of inefficiency if you aren’t mindful. Have a strong screening mechanism that doesn’t consume all of your time & gives you a high-signal outcome." Screening, Interviewing, & Closing a New Hire

Being amazing at small dollar, SMB sales, is really a source of advantage. (Also, having a prior established community to rely upon too.). Lessons for B2B startups for sure.

"Generally speaking, if you’re getting a dozen or so good-quality resumes per week from a posting, that’s a good rate of candidate flow." Sources of Hire

"There's no filter on candidates applying from your job board posting, so have a screening mindset from the beginning so you don’t burn unnecessary time running poorly qualified candidates through a time-consuming interview process." Sources of Hire

"Sales professionals are active networkers, career-minded and 'riser' oriented. They are typically on the lookout for good options, so even the best staff can have an eye open for their next opportunities." Sources of Hire

This is why down-mod is so key for actually useful information marketplaces like StackOverflow. Twitter is architected for bombast, with no backcheck on bad information. Also makes it such that narcissistic charlatans with no self-editing can thrive. (Or win presidencies.)

We need an industry term for high outcome startup lottery winners who feel unshackled to dispense terrible advice, polluting the startup information space.

"Job boards get a lot of crap. The primary ding against them is that because the candidates on job boards are looking, they must not be any good; if they were, they’d be promoted and happy in their existing organizations." Sources of Hire

"The best way to keep recruiting top of mind for your staff is to bake it into recurring team meetings. When you’re in team or all-hands meetings, note open roles that the organization is trying to fill & the successes you’ve had to date." Sources of Hire

"Don't work with too many agencies concurrently. I find that one or two is usually enough. It can be helpful to let them both know that you’re working with another agency, as well. It adds some additional motivation." Sources of Hire

As Mike Kazanjy said, car horns should fire inside the car as well. No negative externality, and only use it when you really need it.

"Proactively characterize the profile that you’re seeking to recruiters you’re working with. If you're seeing candidates that don’t match your profile, and you don’t push back, staffing agency recruiters will smell a pushover." Sources of Hire

"Because salespeople have short average tenures at organizations, they typically stay in touch with recruiters who have placed them before—meaning that those recruiters have a 'hot list' of great candidates they can engage." Sources of Hire
