It’s hard to say which is better between Elementary and Sherlock because Elementary has better writing a better grasp of Sherlock and Watson’s characterization, but Sherlock made everyone tired, angry and disgusted with Sherlock which is what AC Doyle truly wanted all along.

Which I think was the first thing noticeable about the difference in character analysis between the design of E’s Sherlock and Moffat’s. Moffat’s motivations are often vanity, pride, “winning”, teaching someone a lesson, selfishness “state justice” and comedic impact.

By contrast, Elementary’s Sherlock’s tend to be: ethical justice (regardless of state justice), personal responsibility, empathy, lovin’ puzzles, bonding exercises, personal improvement, owing favors to loved ones and massively: Various Forms of Atonement.

Canon Sherlock is downright courteous and charming at times. He feels deeply for the plight of the vulnerable and philosophizes about the beauty of a rose. Modern adaptations almost never acknowledge that.
