Hi gamers. Nothing ever gets properly done on the internet so I decided to do some digging myself The DP2HDMI chip on the Switch OLED dock is a RTD2172N KBDQH1 which seems to match what datamined from the Switch OS back in January

The next thing I did was hook up my Xbox One X to my TV with the new HDMI cable that came in the dock and yep, everything works fine

So what do these two things mean? Well it means the Switch OLED definitely has new hardware that would seemingly support at least HDMI 2.0 and upward. Although it should be noted that Realtek chip does not have a public datasheet available

It should also be noted that the Tegra X1 featured in the Switch does in fact support 4K60fps output over HDMI2.0

All this leads me to at least think that perhaps similarly to how Nintendo just added Bluetooth audio support as an OS update, we may potentially see the same happen with 4K and/or HDR output

This does line up with Bloomberg’s report of developers having 4K devkits since, well, the Switch OLED did get a new devkit released alongside the system and developers do get early releases of later firmware updates to test out certain new OS functions.

It should be noted however that there’s currently nothing OS-side to confirm 4K or HDR is coming and SciresM himself has said this new Realtek chip might just be used for better audio output Without the actual factual information about that chip, it’s hard to confirm or deny

But unless there is something regarding the Switch’s hardware that would make such a feature impossible with the new hardware and updating functions, it’s definitely something that could be assumed to happen given some time

Update update: No, I’m not suggesting the dock can upscale to 4K. No, I don’t think this means we’ll see games running natively at 4K. This is about the possibility of a 4K resolution output which would just be a nice QOL improvement.
