It all reminds me disturbingly of Spain’s supposed destruction of the Maine and WMD in Iraq. Those were plausible theories too, both had spotty evidence to support them, but a war caucus and sympathetic journalists went out in force to assert narratives that just weren’t real.

It’s possible this will end up like my work on the origins of cholera in Haiti, with a solid case behind it and pretty much everyone ultimately accepting it happened (while still refusing any accountability for it). But it is dodgy as hell right now, and getting dodgier.

The funny thing is, if it did start in a lab (and was intentionally/maliciously spread), U.S. officials would then have to admit they had no plan to prevent an act of bio-warfare of this magnitude. That, to me, should be the biggest scandal.
