Since the crisis her husbands hours have been slowing down. They are at real risk of bringing in no money very soon. It’s awful.

This is an awful story about a mom in Texas going hungry to make sure her 6 kids are fed. She’s a stay at home mom. Her husband is a carpenter. The kids rely on school lunch. The good news is that people will read about her and they’ll ask how to they can help her family. We’re good at that - helping individuals we read about or see on TV in a crisis or donating to relief efforts after a disaster hits.

There is no shortage of generosity when the shit hits the fan. What we’re not good at is preventing it. I don’t mean preventing natural disasters or pandemics (which we should arguably be better at). I’m talking about preventing individual financial disaster.

A successful economy is not one that will leave most Americans in ruin if they miss a paycheck. Don’t kid yourself - we may have been doing great on paper before this pandemic. Lots of us might still be fine after it. But a whole lot more of us are in real trouble right now.

What this is proving is that you can’t have a strong society without a strong and resilient workforce. Resilient by way of a strong and fair healthcare system and resilient by way of a strong and fair economy.
