  4. Slip your dowels in the top and bottom and tie a ~30" string/ribbon to the top one so it will hang. Let your favorite little elf pick an ornament and hang it on the tree every night, starting Dec 1!

  5. Next, take your shiny/shear/sparkle fabric and cut 25-2.5x2.5” squares with the pinking shears. I used pinking shears so I wouldn’t have to finish the edges. Place, pin, & sew/glue them onto the ocean and island on 3 sides to make little pockets. Fill each pocket with a photo.

  6. Cut your blue/teal felt to size, with 22” being the width and 25” the length/height. Fold over ~1” on top and bottom toward the back & sew to make a pocket for the wooden dowels (but don’t put them in yet). Sew/glue Christmas Island onto the middle of the blue felt.

  7. Print these images, cut them out and match up the dashed lines. Pin to the sand felt, and cut out the island. The final result should be ~14x14". Disclaimer: these images are untested.

  8. I then looked up Christmas Island. Turns out there are two - one in the Pacific (Kirimati), and one in the Indian Ocean. Kirimati is a coral atoll that seemed complicated for a felt outline, so I used the Indian Ocean Christmas Island, which is an Australian territory.

  9. Print & cut out each of the photos. I nipped the corners so they weren’t squares, and used a hole puncher to punch holes. Make labels or write the names of each on the back. Cut ~6-7” of string/yarn/ribbon and attach to each of the photos so they’ll hang. Set aside.

  10. (#5 has some extras. If you just do 24 then you only need to print the first 4 photos, but then you don't get Shepherd's Beaked Whale)

  11. I found photos of each and made 2x2” square images, and put them in a 4x6” file so I could send it to be printed. This was supposed to be for personal use, so I will admit that I just found whatever I could from the internets. Apologies to all the photographers.

  14. Because I can’t go 5 min without creating a new google doc, I made a matrix of those Christmas words, plotted against types of organisms to maximize the types of organisms and terms (a few didn’t make the cut).

  15. First, I searched & WoRMS to find a list of marine organisms with Christmas/winter words: Angel, Bell, Candle, Candy, Carol, Christmas, Cookie, etc. Since this is an Advent calendar, Christmas words made sense. But you could do this for any holiday.

  19. And now it's time for make your very own OCEAN ADVENT CALENDAR. Yes, it's a bit late for this year, but get started now for 2020. This project was inspired by ’s post about marine animals with holiday-ish names. Thanks, Craig, for the inspiration for a fun project. 1/
