Is the paper on bioRxiv? (If not, why not?)
-
-
-
Because we only recently started to manage the rules regarding this and explore which journals allow this and which not. Still not sure we can submit it there now?
-
You definitely can, and definitely should, post to bioRxiv now. Even if you opt to keep waiting for a response from
@SciReports. -
Brilliant, thank you!
-
"You are welcome to post pre-submission versions or the original submitted version of the manuscript on...a preprint server at any time." https://www.nature.com/srep/journal-policies/editorial-policies …

Awesome idea Richard. The ECR can then demonstrate the work is complete, and engage in discussions with potenrial future funders, employers, etc.
-
This is a crucial point. Potential employers (e.g. academic interview panel) can see the work in its entirety and judge it for themselves, and then at the interview the candidate can motivate the extraordinarily lengthy time for the review process.

That sucks! Perhaps worth doing preprints in future? Most journals accept them + allows ppl to see work even while in the review machine!
-
Oh yes, thx, we have recently learned to do this

Did you at least pre-print on
@biorxivpreprint or other so it can go on CV? -
Thank you! We were silly not to do this initially but science twitter has kindly set us straight and we will do now.

Does publishing in
@SciReports help career prospects much? Many claim you need Cell/Nature/Science or similar.https://twitter.com/Katlab_UCL/status/1019588865768685568 … -
This is a Nature journal but a 'lesser' one in several respects. But one can publish outstanding work in other outlets that will be recognised if good. Good science is much more than what journal impact factors reflect.
-
My impression was that
@SciReports is simply a NPG clone of PLOS One to not miss $1.5k from publishing any technically sound work. Many high quality papers were published in both & in much less expensive journals but I feel that phenomenon of glam journals is still very real.

Oh my. We just had a manuscript take about 3 months to get to review
@scireports and I thought that was bad enough, I totally get your frustration. Just as we were going to withdraw and submit somewhere else they finally sent it for review. -
There is hope then! Thx. It is always frustrating but when some of the authors are starting out and they have only one or two other papers it is particularly unfortunate

I believe that they struggle to get reviewers.
-
I agree and sympathise. We acknowledged the difficulties in our emails. But journals cannot delay review as such. They have huge profit margins because they do not pay reviewers. I am glad preprints are taking over...and we will definitely do this from now on
-
My advice would be to withdraw the manuscript and avoid
@SciReports until they become a proper journal. I autodecline every request from them due to the unacceptable 10-day turnaround and the almost daily harassment by email if you make the mistake to review for them.

You can also ask an editor if he/she is spending a hard time to find a reviewer. If that is the case, you could also suggest more reviewers. I have a similar experience with another journal. Usually, SciReports gives only 10 days for reviewers to review once they have reviewers.
-
We have done this twice. The 2nd we send a new list of 6 reviewers
