I love science but in these sad, political developments it has not helped me as much as my much older friend, literature. I re-read Waiting for the Barbarians, by Coetzee, and discovered Cassanda by Christa Wolf. A weird sense of consolation when the same trouble is universal.

Many will recognise this exploratory, curiosity- and imagination-driven attitude to what we call 'home'. Sadly, the fearful, tribalistic, nationalistic, sometimes also racist, exploitative attitude won. Many examples in history. I just did not expect this from this brave nation

This, just this. It is easy to see why they have not forgotten what it means to be European. How can some many others of their generation throw it all away on the illusion of control and impatience (getting it done)?

Read lots of papers on theory over the last few months. When writing up discussion of new paper, I thought it might be useful to put papers together from which I (as theory noob) learned most. Here's the doc, in case you're interested: Feedback welcome!

The fact that this page is still legal in 2020 is just incredible. I respect your concerns for the visual politics issues, and I know some of the deep reasons why popularism and misogyne go together, but it nevertheless remains shameful for Britain that these exist legally.
