I've been thinking about something for a few days, and I'm not sure how to talk about it. It's Weird Al. Yes, really. Warning: I'm going to be a killjoy. You may want to stop reading now.

All I knew of Weird Al were his parodies from the 80s. I thought his public persona was that of a nerdy yet harmless goofball. Well, I'd never heard his original songs. I have now. They're really fucking dark.

"She was my high school romance She was fun to talk to and nice to smell So I took her to the homecoming dance Then I tied her to a chair and I shaved off all her hair And I left her in the desert all alone Well sometimes in my dreams I can still hear the screams"

That's some really dark shit. Who's the target demo? Young white men? The nerdy outsiders who feel like society has pushed them out, who have trouble connecting with others? That's who I think of when I think of "Weird Al's audience."

This has really been bothering me. I know there are lots of violent, misogynistic songs out there. What gets to me about this is the packaging. I feel like it's pretending to be harmless and funny, and it's really fucking not.

These songs feel like incel (involuntary celibacy) anthems. When men don't get what they want, they get violent. This is part of that. The friend zone. The nice guy finishes last. It's bullshit. No one owes you a relationship or sex.

But usually not with people who threaten, demean and resent us. If that’s a problem for you, I’m sorry.Show this thread0 replies 0 retweets 0 likesShow this threadThanks.
