Of course, none of that happened. The smallpox vaccine saved countless lives and ended up wiping the virus off the face of the earth. Here's hoping science and cooler heads prevail with this pandemic, and we'll see an end to COVID-19 soon.

Anti-vaccine conspiracy theories are old news, too. Way back in the late 1700s, when Jenner developed the life-saving smallpox vaccine, there was a backlash from some people who claimed that because it was derived from cowpox, it was unnatural - against the rules of nature.

For example, scientists have known even since the 1918 influenza pandemic that wearing face masks helps to stop the spread of the virus. But even then, some people refused, forming anti-mask groups in defiance.

As I was working on this book, I was struck by how much HASN'T changed. Even though SARS-CoV-2 is a new microbe in humans, much of what we're seeing as we live through this outbreak is an echo of pandemics past
