For the longest time I assembled and linked Nintendo DS programs on the command line because I couldn’t figure out makefiles
Twitter, what is the weirdest programming thing you've ever done but at the time thought it was fine? Mine is in the late 90s, I used mIRC script to write my own HTTP server. It did work and it did serve files, but I kind of shudder at the fact that I once did this.

I built a mIRC bot on EFnet that was a virtual puppy that followed me around in IRC channels, shyly looking out from behind my legs and then wagging & sniffing to greet newcomers to the channel. It was more popular than I was. People came from all to see & pet my virtual pup.

Funny thing, i built it on a combination of 60 IRC defence / attack bots. When somebody came & attacked/flooded (DOSed) the channel or tried to hack Admin rights, the scripts would go active counterattacking and kick/banning the attackers. Everyone said "Good dog!" <Wag><Wag>

So before anyone gets all up and weird about this, matlab has good java interoperability so you end up using Java in a weird statically, but not explicitly typed language. It’s maddening

I had a feature phone with a keyboard and unlimited SMS. It turns out that my carrier let you send SMS to email addresses, so I made a program that let you have an interactive shell over normal SMS. I was about 9 years old. That is how I learned how much dmesg outputs.

I had a simple "check if the source of the email is right" condition, but I had no idea it was possible to spoof emails

I built a microcontroller thingy to log atmosphere pressure to a csv file on an sd card, for model rockets to collect altitude. It worked by appending the file every 50ms with a new row. Caches are for wimps, i live on the edge.

As an undergrad I built Java things with Makefiles bc I inherited a research project that did it that way & didn’t know Java so thought it was legit. All the deps were static JARs in a local folder *shivers in horror*. I kind of want to write a Make-based Maven clone now though

Just become an Android OS dev and you can use Android Make to build java... I wish I was kidding. I spent last week pairing with someone to get Dagger compiling with Makefiles in AOSP.
