    I mean...I’ve got to think the 1918 flu is just horribly under-represented in examinations of 1920s culture and social priorities. This shit is traumatic. I’m looking at the decadence, violence, religious fervor, and consumer culture in a completely new light.

        I didn’t know much at all until I interviewed with a reinsurance firm fifteen years ago and it was mentioned three times that day. I wonder if it’s a “failure” of US history and thus not discussed widely

        I think all the horror of the flu got conflated with the horror of WWI, at least in American and European minds. It would be pretty hard to tease those apart.

        I did think the shut-down of some of the Iditarod checkpoints this year was interesting, with the direct reference to the outsized toll that the 1918 flu took on Alaska Native communities.
