    On Taliban & women rights: important to remain focused on legal rights and next steps for existing legal rights of women. That should be the baseline. Behavior/practice can change overnight & tends to be context specific/varied by province, local “authorities” etc

    The Taleban continue to consider themselves entitled to granting amnesty others but do not seek one from the people. How about also a truth commission?

    In his first press conference the Taliban’s chief spox Zabibullah Mujahid very conciliatory — emphasizes complete amnesty. On women rights: “there will be no violence against women, no prejudice,” can study and work, but repeats the vague caveat “within bounds of Islamic law”

    My latest: President Ghani, who fled , was a polarizing and abrasive leader who was unwilling to compromise or cede power. Instead of peace, he oversaw the end of 20 years of democratic rule in as the Taliban seized power in Kabul.
