We help when we can but we simply don't have enough money to help everyone. It's heartbreaking having to tell someone that we don't have $600 or $1000 or often more to pay the fines that will allow them to get an ID.

Our volunteers have become experts at going to court to get payment plans. Really. This is why I say we have the best volunteers in the world. It is criminal that anyone who can't pay their fine can't vote. And it is wrong that the Florida leg is doing this AFTER the people voted

PS for folks asking about how fines and fees work after jail, here's a great article.https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/07/the-cost-of-monetary-sanctions-for-prisoners/489026/ …

So, one of my team members just saw my twitter thread and sent me this note. She lives in Vero Beach, FL and was at the DMV yesterday (I cut the part talking about her kids).pic.twitter.com/RJy8Db2zQa

Oh my gosh. Incredibly huge thank you to everyone who has responded, shared, and donated. This is why we will win in the end.

Good morning! Due to all of your incredible generosity I asked my Florida team to send me the lists all of our volunteers keep of clients who have fines and fees we can’t pay and I’m already hearing back! We are SO excited that we’ll be able to help more people!

To everyone pointing out that the 24th Amendment exists. Believe me, I know. Voter ID laws violate it too. But... we also have an Emoluments Clause. The Constitution is only as powerful as our willingness to enforce it.

Start a GoFundMe for their fines. I know I'd contribute. This is nothing more than an obvious GOP panic ploy.
-
Will that help to pay their fines?
-
Yep. Write a note that says "fines" and we'll earmark it for that purpose. We work with folks who need their fines paid every day and we usually can't afford to help so we keep a list for when we raise the money.
-
I did put that in the memo, so that's great.

How high are fees typically? Does everyone have them? Are these court costs or fines or both? Is it ALL fees or only some? (Floridian here who’d like to help.)
-
It ranges from $100 to tens of thousands (or sometimes more). I would say that we generally see between $500- $2500 or so but that's a serious generalization.
-
Oh wow. That’s a lot. I imagine some extremely high percentage of those will never be repaid, meaning a large percentage of these people will never be able to vote? This is infuriating.
-
Yep. That's exactly what they're doing.
-
Sorry, another question. Do most returning citizens have these fees or fines?
