As I understand it, in go, white represents the stronger player, and black is the weaker. Black gets to go first to give advantage to the weaker player. So if we are talking symbolic significance, go frames white as the superior color.

Ummmmm.... no. Go is territorial and playing first has an inherent advantages, such as being able to stake a claim on territory. As compensation, White gets additional points (Komi) that are applied when scoring after the game.
