While this is a failure of education, it's also almost certainly a backfire effect against Republicans' attempts to brand every social policy they don't like "socialism" or "communism." If you do that enough, the word loses its meaning and suddenly communism doesn't sound so bad.

I agree with you. Republicans are the party who cried communism/socialism while telling young people to work low wage jobs until they die which will be sooner than expected since they probably won't have health insurance.

I think millennials are more supportive of the idea that everyone should be able to receive some base level of resources from institutions that use broader societal resources such as labor, infrastructure, etc.

Many people are under the mistaken assumption that Scandinavian countries are socialist. They're not. Very few countries are constitutionally socialist.

My opinion is, they really like the idea of Scandinavian socialism, but are not informed enough to know the difference. Of course, in US they’re generally labeled and defined as identical.
