Not knowing the premise, I was all, Oh, so she wants to dance and...wait, no, she only cares abt getting into a school, but is using THEIR culture as a stepping stone??? And is recruiting them for her shine? Yikes.
-
Is it also problematic that they have POC characters gatekeeping her initial attempts? I feel like there’s a reverse-racism angle there I could see assholes exploiting.

Why would it be so hard to make a Black girl the protagonist? Judging by the trailer, there’s no actual tackling of race issues, so probably little to no change in the script if the protag was Black?
-
Maybe the thinking is that a Black girl can’t be not-that-good at dancing, which is pretty racist

“What if we took the premise of Save the Last Dance and made it WORSE?”

This just reminds me how Bring It On is a cute, fun movie, but would've been more interesting from the perspective of the Clovers.
-
At least the Toros got called out for their appropriation of the Clovers' routines.
