But I know that reading isn't easy for everyone (hello dyslexia and other challenges) and I know that learning styles can vary wildly. That's before we get into all the media that can be educational and informative that isn't a book, from podacasts to documentaries.

I'm probably biased by my own experiences, but as someone who read early and easily, but struggled in math? I always find it weird that we accept that math is hard, but not that reading can be difficult. Mass literacy is such a recent thing! There's a lot of reasons for that

And being willing to learn, being curious, being someone who wants to know things is completely separate from being a person who reads books. Book ownership isn't actually an indication of anything but access to income. Someone can not own books but have a library card or an app

The WORK I have to do to convince my kids who struggle with reading that they are not stupid and worthless. I think that there is value in being a skilled and broad reader, but it does not determine your worth as a person.

Yeah & also... if you keep trying, you keep learning and if you can be more stubborn than your frustration at not being as good right now as you wanna be, you can end up still better at something than folks who had it easier but didn't know how to deal with frustration & gave up

Reading comes in different forms. Listening to audiobooks is reading. I have dyslexia. I am an avid reader via audiobooks, e-books, traditionally books. Growing up, my local librarian also had dyslexia and actively encouraged my love of reading.
-
It is, but there must be people out there who are dyslexic or hyperlexic *and* have hearing/processing/attention disorders.

Although, Me a huge reader was married to a person who didn't read & he was jealous of the attention I gave to books, he felt that attention was being stolen from him & once became angry because I was sitting on the couch beside reading him while he flipped television channels.
