And everyone's accent is an amalgam of all accents from around them growing up. If you moved a lot while younger, you have a freaky accent that doesn't fit in anywhere but no one can tell why
-
Very true. I didn't move around as a child but I live in a military town and have been around people from many different places. When I talk to people from up north, they say I sound like a southerner (am from NC). When I meet folks from down here, they can't place my accent

"General American” accent is still an accent. Everyone has an accent. Accents are awesome! And no accent is “correct."https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_American_English …

I was told/read in a Linguistics class in college that, in fact, the standard american accent is the West Coast accent. Because over history as all different populations migrated West, all existing accents combined to produce something "neutral."
-
Except that, it's been long enough now since the migration West that there are regional variations starting to develop, even within single States, like California.

Jesus I'm Irish and even I can distinguish the nasal whine of a Californian from other American accents.
-
I would add that I did very much enjoy visiting California in spite of that.
