Mind you there are also Black classics that predate the Harlem Renaissance & all of those books are public domain too. And most of the Chicago Renaissance is public domain. Phillis Wheatley. W.E.B Dubois. Zora Neale Hurston. James Baldwin. Langston Hughes. Gwendolyn Brooks.

They could have Googled, chosen a dozen books by actual Black authors that are classics & sent those out with fresh covers & a big event. Add in bringing in contemporary Black authors to discuss these works & the whole thing is a win. They didn't do the easy or logical thing.

Again, in New York. In 2020. They chose the path that would put some very racist narratives forward. It cost more to screw this up than to get it right, so it can't be profit as a reason for this logic. So what is it then?

I’m thinking how many of these will reach their intended buyer and then be returned because it’s just the same book pretending it’s not.

This company and publishers, like Trump, have no regard integrity, justice and truth. Only what is expedient in serving their interests, which in both cases is greed. I'm so sorry for all who continue to be denied justice. And truth.

I have a bad feeling it is about profit. Almost no sales from Black people or allies, of course, but huge amounts from self-proclaimed "good white people" who want to feel virtuous and showcase their "tolerance" without doing a darn thing about actual racism.

doubly so, because these are all public domain books that B&N publishes under its own label, so they don't pay royalties to anyone.
