I think it's a denial mechanism. 1. They fear and dread being disabled or sick themselves. 2. They can't "fix us" therefore they can out-attitude us in their mind. So freaking irritating. Right up there with the "what's your diet like??" crowd

I always reply that the "bad attitude" in this sentence is not that of disabled people, but the shitty ableist attitudes that create and sustain the barriers and social exclusion that we have to face.
