gravitational 3-body problems are great for chaotic dynamics. one of my favorites is the sitnikov system: given two equal massive bodies rotating about one another on ellipses, add a third tiny mass perfectly poised between them. give it a kick & what happens?pic.twitter.com/fn8ZSHF1kO

how tiny? i'm surprised that floating point error wasn't enough to induce this kind of behavior with equal masses

1e-10 (the initial setup is 1 unit wide). It does also go chaotic just from error buildup, but after a few more cycles than this (depending on time step used). Also - the masses aren't actually equal here, but 1,0.8,0.8 as given in this paper https://arxiv.org/abs/1805.07980
