Guessing this requires an even number of rings?

It works with 3 if you allow it to invert, but I'm not sure if it is ever possible with an odd number while keeping the surface finite throughout. I suspect not.pic.twitter.com/5D1V2qv1uQ

How would the mesh part actually work like that IRL? I could be mistaken but it doesn't seem like it would.

It would need to be something stretchy because the area does change slightly.
