To be a good teacher, you need to be humble, reflective, & listen more than you speak. Your default setting should be invitational, not proclamational. And lacking privilege becomes an asset (in some spaces) because you have a deeper understanding of power&context than others do.

“Why should I pay your student loans when I’ve already been paid?” and "If you can't pay your loans it's because you got a dumb degree and/or are bad with your money" is filled with such shitty assumptions. Let's talk about them.

According to new poll from Longevity Project and most Americans believe that older workers make good mentors, help companies understand older customers and get along with co-workers -- yet few companies have HR programs to support them.

I'm interviewing a male academic about what it's like to be a academic at the same time as being a man. What should I ask him?

What was one reason you decided to join the graduate program you did? Recruitment for my program starts tonight, so I figured that would be a cool thread. For me, a major reason was the type of research that was being done at the institution.

Know yourself enough to know the best time to look at your student evaluations to optimize their utility. Remember basic mathematical concepts: ratios (+ to -) provide insight, Outliers on either end need to be kept in perspective. Revel in accolades. Evolve from the critiques.

I'm really proud of all of the professors out there who just finished your first semester. It is really hard and you did it and you have a couple of solid preps under your belt and probably a better understanding of your uni's culture/expectations/offices.

Teaching where our class sizes are capped at 30, I agree. But we're on a 7 class/yr load, and I tell everyone who will listen that the number one thing *we* could do to improve teaching & learning is to reduce that # to give faculty the bandwidth to teach as well as we ache to.
