Also the cost of living is much higher. In Oklahoma the teacher pay average is 29k, $1,000 more than it was when I graduated high school in 1998. Gas was less than a dollar back then.

And health care, too. The rise year to year in the cost of healthcare is not sustainable. We need ‘If then’ rules: Salary raises must out pace a set of metrics, such as utilities, healthcare, housing. If those metrics raise X percent, salary must increase X %.

Agreed. And, doing right for all of our teachers from Pre-K to graduate school. We all are challenged by long hours, extra work assignments, and trying to meet our financial obligations.

Actually, my health insurance costs have risen closer to 20% in the past 10 years. Fewer districts are including benefits. And ACA costs are rising nearly double-digits each year.
