Why are Medicare and Social Security being referred to as entitlements? Americans have paid into these programs all their working lives.

Because Congress under GOP control has borrowed heavily against those funds for decades by going to war to destabilize other countries and strip their resources (like oil), and now they want to appear to be saving us money by taking our money to maintain their wars.

Indeed. Think about this, women are paid less than men in workplace, that translates to less SS also. And women are more likely to live longer then men. Something seriously wrong with this picture and Trump wants to cut what little we get? Not his to cut, it's ours.

Even with Social Security and Medicare, many seniors already live at or in poverty. Average retiree gets $1422 a month. Subtract Medicare and Medigap, and you're probably down to $1100 a month. Poverty level is $1063 a month.https://www.thebalance.com/federal-poverty-level-definition-guidelines-chart-3305843 …

It’s absurd for them to believe that they can even touch this fund for anything other than what WE paid in to it for! This money has nothing to do with general funds or their special projects and should not be pillaged to pay for poor fiscal management...
-
It might look like the holy grail to us but to them it is a two-tiered opportunity: use it to bring down the deficit and liberate employers by relieving them of payment.

Don’t you love how the poorest are always the 1st choice for cuts - while many of the rich, and corporations, never get their tax increased?

SS is NOT an "entitlement". It is a deferred retirement benefit plan that we were mandated to contribute to our entire working life. For many, esp elder women who were SAHMs while their husbands worked, their spousal SS benefit it is the only source of income
-
Correct. Remove SS and Medicare and more of us will be on Welfare and unable to survive. Many, myself included, have no company retirement plan.
