Abolishing the Department of Education would be a good start. Decentralize schools. Encourage competition.

I'm concerned about extending the school day, as you proposed. I don't see enough lawmakers funding that which then becomes a mandate for schools (let kids stay until 6 PM) without the funding to pay for the additional hours asked.
