The most tragic part of this story is that the racism embedded in the algorithm was entirely inadvertent. By not factoring in existing differences in healthcare use, the creators perpetuated exactly what they were trying to get rid of.

The algorithms were almost certainly designed to optimize for maximum revenue, not optimal health. And they did as their human masters designed them.

Watched a Black Mother in ER almost lose her 17 year old Son! Went and counseled her and she listened. 2 Hours more he would have been dead! Racial bias was the culprit!

Unfortunately it's a real (& documented) phenomenon. There's even a field of research on this, called "healthcare disparities". A big factor is "inherent bias" & many providers aren't even aware they're doing it. Some (but not all) med schools now include this in their training.
