Imagine if doctors & nurses had to buy their work supplies for patients, like teachers do for students & classrooms? I was dumbfounded when I first learned that US teachers have to buy their supplies. I work in an office & my employer buys *my* pens & paper! #unfair

Not all US teachers do--just the ones in areas where schools are woefully underfunded, and there are way too many of those, unfortunately.

@KamalaHarris one year I spent $650.00+ and not just on supplies: food for kids who did not have dinner the night before; clothing to keep up with their growth; entertainment like movies and restaurants so they aren’t sitting home alone... -
I pay for family’s tickets, trips, food, clothes, toys, gifts , etc. I set up Smart phones for them and call and make medical appointments. They speak another language so I translate everything! When I say MY family I mean my student’s families.

As a teacher, would be nice to be able to afford health insurance and rent.

My cousin has done this for years she’s going broke buying supplies! They all come to her room to get free supplies even though she’s just an art teacher!

A report from the nonprofit Center on Budget and Policy Priorities found that in 2015, the latest year for which there is available data, 29 states were still providing less total school funding per student than they were in 2008.https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2018/05/11/ants-termites-outdated-or-no-textbooks-its-about-more-than-a-paycheck-for-fed-up-teachers-in-north-carolina/?utm_term=.5e47fe5596c7 …
