Maybe it's not because of wages. Maybe it's because they don't want to be the Dems' political pawns and work in systems which stifle creativity, "teach to the test", etc.

Lol. I can definitely tell you that I left that major after I got a taste of the amount of things that I would have to personally be in charge of/responsible for vs the compensation for said responsibilities. I make more than a teacher with way less responsibilities now.

I’m guessing they also don’t want a job where they have a fairly good chance of being shot and killed...perhaps we should also do something about that little problem...

I think it’s more about the money.

You don't have to major in education to be an effective teacher. Raise wages and do something about student loans so people can afford to go into this important profession.

I think it would also be nice if teachers weren't treated as scapegoats for society's ills. I also think that we really haven't collectively gotten over the belief that anyone can teach. My student teaching experience was so horrible that I left the profession.

And teachers are leaving at high numbers. It's wages but it's expectations too. We're expected to solve every social problem. We're evaluated on the performance of kids who are over tested and under supported. They're breaking the teachers to break public ed.

Soon, we will need to be sharpshooters and karate experts too.

I think education should only be available as a minor or double major; teachers need to learn more than how to teach. Pick something: -chemistry -engineering -computer science -pre-med -history -economics -mathematics -political science Or whatever is of interest. Agree?

My degree was English and Speech Ed. I took as many English classes as speech and my number of Ed classes was actually significantly lower. I'm not sure you know what you're talking about..or perhaps how it really happens in practice.
