What teacher do you know personally who takes a summer off?

Teachers almost never get the holidays completely free. There’s always lesson prep, test prep, huge swathes of papers to mark, extra training, being available to assist students in their coursework etc. Teachers work SO hard and get paid so little for how much they do.

My mom works tutoring jobs almost every night of the week after she leaves the classroom. Her days are 7am to 9:30pm regularly and on the weekends she has to grade papers. She spends her own money on paper for students and school supplies since the school can’t afford them.

Teachers definitely deserve a raise and more respect. Valuing education is something America does poorly. It’s no wonder the US is ranked 27th in the world...

Are you confusing students with teachers?

My husband worked two jobs (and summers) for the first 15 years of teaching. As the main provider for our family (I'm on SSD) it was the only way to keep food on the table, clothes on our kids, a roof over our heads, and pay for our medical expenses.

It’s not as if they didn’t know what the financial rewards were upon joining!

Is this an argument in favor of continuing to pay them poorly? What is your point here? Teachers knew they were getting into a very tough profession with mediocre pay so we should continue to underpay them and let good teachers leave the profession? And your solution is?

Education and healthcare are both areas where more money does not lead to better outcomes. We need schools run by teachers, held accountable by parents, and biased toward what kids need. We also need health systems run by doctors, held accountable by patients. Bureaucrats fail.

Most professionals get paid vacation. We work during June/July. We have to go to trainings and create curriculum, lesson plans, actual lessons, assessments, scrutinize previous year data, etc. I also average 12 hour days. Grade weekends. Taking kids to UIL this weekend.
