Providing such benefits should be up to the employer who is providing their paycheck and creating the job in the first place.

Employers know they can get away with not providing sick leave, so many don’t. Because this is the case they create both a health hazard to the community and their own employees. The government has the right to promote the general welfare of the people and require sick leave.

It's not right to force a small business to offer benefits it can't afford. If you don't like your job, get a new one!

As a consumer, do you want to go to your favourite mom and pop restaurant and be served food cooked by a person with the flu? Sick people do NOT belong out in public spreading their illness! Good lord, this isn’t a big government issue, it’s a common sense issue.

For a self-proclaimed Progressive nation, the United States is actually quite backwards, indeed, primitive. But then, it can be expected from a country that celebrates capitalism over humanitarianism. In America, $$$$$$$ rule -always!

Even with paid sick days many workers fear using them as some firms will consider them less than team players. If anything firms expect workers to be hard at it long after quitting time Say what you will about unions, they do protect workers' rights.

...and if you're a Republican, or otherwise heartless, they should get sick leave so they stay home and get well instead of infecting and diminishing the whole workforce. (If you put it in terms of costing corporations, the GOP can understand it.)

My husband gets 2 sick days/yr; they don’t carry over. He has no paternity leave, giving us his 2-week vacation for his time off when we have a baby. Sucks. Thanks
@GavinNewsom for your new policy to come! Hope it takes effect soon... And hope my husband doesn’t get sick!

The knock-on effect is that people will turn up to work when too sick, not be as productive, and then infect all their co-workers who will also then get sick and be less productive. It probably costs more in the longer term than investing a bit in employee health.

True, but more likely 8hrs a mo, 8hrs used monthly so it's not available when needed. Agencies allow giving time to other employees until that too is abused. The world offers me a living . . .
