Emigrants used to come through Ellis island. There was no welfare or EBT cards or free medical care. They had to work to survive.They didn't get benefits or free housing.That poem,written in 1883,although a beautiful sentiment ,can hardly pertain to what is happening now.

It says nothing about US citizens paying for them, while other citizens are living without healthcare, having to choose between food and meds, or entire families are on the streets. How about taking care of our poor? Our tired? Our huddled masses who are hungry?
