If we can't pay them more why not make teachers, cops, firefighters exempt from state income taxes? Give these folks something other than lip service for once.

Or develop an effective student loan forgiveness program. Many teachers leave by year 5; do a 10 year forgiveness program - for each year you teach, 1/10 of your loans are forgiven; extra years for additional degree and loan forgiveness.

I worked with Melissa for several years. I also had a second job. I quit my teaching job for my 2nd job b/c it was less stressful. Melissa is an excellent teacher and a wonderful resource for her students. It's criminal that she 100 hours a week just to live.

Look at what Corporate trainers with a four year or masters degree make. Teachers should be making as much or more than that. Teachers are our future.

As a retail store manager of 4 years, I made $65K + bonuses. As a teacher for almost 9 years, I have almost gotten to $50. Almost.

Thanks so much for sharing. I teach in this district. Have been her for 15 years, have a masters degree, and still have to work many hours at a part-time job just to pay the bills on my tiny apartment.

Let me say this LOUD and CLEAR.. Teachers do not get free benefits! We pay 12% into our retirement... For a family of 4 health insurance is $834 a month... We work an average of 10 hours a day... We work weekends and those "vacations" are working vactions...
