Serious question. How does a law expire? I thought laws could only be repealed through congress.

The VAWA is only funded for 5 years each time it is renewed; ergo, it has to be renewed every 5 years. It was set to expire 9/30/2018 but got kicked down the road a few times. Sadly, what is rarely reported is that VAWA runs on a net positive: it SAVES both money and lives!

This needs to be a permanent law! Why does this end all the time?
-
I know the answer. I just want it out there.

I find it unfathomable that a piece of legislation crafted to help women had an expiration date. Totally unacceptable.

You can thank the House Republicans for that. The ones who did vote for it only did so with expiration dates.

Why did it even have an expiration date??

To force congress to evaluate modify it. I like that with any law on the books.

You could always fund the wall and move on to renew it

OR you can just renew it without strings attached.
