The system really is a debtors' prison. It compels people without means to plead guilty rather than be separated from children and jobs, and the court-affiliated "loan sharks" extract years of interest payments for small charges. Trespassing, for heaven's sakes.

Debtors prison is when you go to prison for owing money. Going to jail for a crime is not debtors prison. In the story she refused to be interviewed or appear in court. Psychological exam was in the works, but not done. More to this than instant outrage.

This just tore my heart in half. I can’t even imagine how alone and unimportant Ms. Dotson-Stephan’s must have felt. This is a genuine tragedy. Please help fix this Senator. Thank you!

You feel bad because you feel prison is awful and takes away your freedoms. To many homeless they find it adds structure, nutrition and safety to their lives. The headline was written to rip at your soul. The facts seem to tell a different story. She wanted shelter.

So many failures in this story. The whole system needs reform. Justice seems far from just these days.

It’s a system run by the government, what do you expect

It was ridiculous to even have bail for a treaspassing charge. She should have been ROR.

...this was a state case, how can US Congress fix it? criminal law is largely a local issue.

Still makes sense to bring light to it. Otherwise it’ll keep happing unnoticed. It’s also a human being issue... human beings treated this way. That deserves attention from anyone.
