I met Congresswoman Chisholm in an elevator when she compassionately helped a stranger who was in a terrible state of mind. I will never forget her voice of kindness as she calmed that man. #Humanity.
Since Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s boldness opened doors, countless others have been inspired to follow in her footsteps. Over the past 50 years, more than 40 Black women have been elected to Congress — and that number will increase in the 116th Congress.

I hope there is an increase of a wide sampling of our melting pot. Hispanics, African Americans, Indian, Native Americans and so on and so forth. Our government needs to reflect its citizens.

Because then more people see themselves being represented. No one race is a monolith but it helps to see people who may have had some commonalities in their upbringings. It connects us.
