Sexual orientation isn't a race. It should not be a census category... however, the LGBTQ community should be afforded every benefit of society and protection under the law

The census tracks a variety of demographic categories and is not necessarily restricted to race. Surveying populations overlooked by or eclipsed by the mainstream, assists in a given population's recognition and inclusion in the American social contract.

They shouldn't ask this for the same reason that the 2020 census shouldn't ask about religious affiliation.

I imagine this is down to not being able to mix religion and state. But I do think this endeavour would help LGBTQ people not only feel included and encourage them to vote, but offer us more accurate data on voting paradigms across the States.

I do not see that ANY sexual preference questions are relevant to a census.

Representation is based on the census. The number of citizens who are part of the LGBT would show where they are being represented or if more representation is needed for this group.
