Today in history, Pres. Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957 into law. The first civil rights legislation passed since Reconstruction, the Act sought to address practices like literacy tests and poll taxes. While the impact was limited, it led to the expanded 1964 Act.

Well unfortunately those people spent the last 70 years convincing a bunch of other stupid people that these things are a good ideal, even if it is against their own interest, and now those people are called the Republican Party.

When my dad was young, he was a coal miner. He voted for Truman but also voted for Eisenhower. He never had much money, but he sent all five of his kids to college. I never heard him demean another person, use racial or sexual slurs. He was a dignified man. He was an American.
