Isn't it kind of obvious that people feel patriotism for their countries, though? I can imagine a similar piece being written about the US, featuring comments about teary-eyed elderly ladies on the National Mall for July 4.

Not a normative claim about "organic" expressions of patriotism – just a refutation of the too-common notion that in China, they're the product only of propaganda, "brainwashing," and censorship. Clearly, these all factor in, but it's infantilizing to attribute only to these.

Agree. This is a rare good example to foreign correspondents covering China of how objective reporting should be. Unfortunately many were lazy and already had their verdict before going to the event.

In Brett’s defense, he is merely spouting the US conventional thinking about China. Like most other stances US takes it also just happens to be based on bigotry and ignorance
