“It’s not just that the emperor has no clothes, it’s more like the emperor has been standing in the public square for fifteen years screaming, I’m naked! I’m naked! Look at me! And the scientific establishment is like, Wow, what a beautiful outfit.”

A surprisingly large number of these frustrating claims would go away if people would just correct their alpha level for multiple comparisons as taught in intro stats. A handful of statisticians argue against these corrections. Their papers are cited 1000s of times. Go figure ;)

Update: Statistics Finland has changed their definition of statistical significance. Now they say it's "[…] a central concept used in trying to describe, that the result isn’t caused by chance. […]", and avoid giving a definition altogether! 😅

"We need to simplify reality in order to deal with it. The question is this: How much of an abstraction can a map (i.e. a model in a research study, making those simplified assumptions) be, in order to still represent reality adequately?"

"Thus, when you find an error, you trust that it’s okay to point it out. And then you find yourself accused of being a destructive, sanctimonious second-stringer — all for applying the ‘scientific values’ that you’d been taught."

English language Christmas songs: “christmas is fun and SEXY!!! Jingle bells! Reindeers! HO HO HO MERRY XMAS!” Finnish Christmas songs: “husband died, children left, grandma is lonely and alone. No one cares. Also this bird is your brother who froze to death. Happy Christmas”

Success in grad school requires: -creativity to imagine things that don’t yet exist -curiosity to never stop asking questions -initiative to seek out information in unexpected places Yet, the 17 years of school that precede grad school almost select for the opposite of this.

From the abstract: "... the same dataset was independently analyzed by 70 teams, testing nine ex-ante hypotheses. The flexibility of analytic approaches is exemplified by the fact that no two teams chose identical workflows to analyze the data."

Two years later the 1st results were in & they were striking: most exaggeration in science/health news was already in the press releases issued by universities. Just process that fact for a moment. Lay write up of the study: 14/x

What researchers present in pub’s often only represents a small portion of what they actually did, with the best results selected to tell a subjectively coherent story to increase the odds of publication. That is the academic culture in which I was trained. 1/n

Yes! Replicability is just one aspect in this big mess where several problems are intertwined. Bad theories ➡️Bad / vague hypotheses ➡️Likely no true effects ➡️Positive findings increasingly due to chance or p-hacking ➡️Results not replicable
