So Google's new "Doodle Champion Island Games" is filled to the brim with Japanese culture! Some of it is more obvious and recognisable to people, but in this thread I'm going to talk about my favourite champion from the game, the Ainu-inspired Fukuro champion! 🧵(Thread)

There were a few people doing embroidery but I didn’t want to disturb anyone so I just sat and read. The center is on the third floor of a building nestled down a Tokyo side street. I doubt many people know that it’s there unless they’re looking for it. Perhaps that’s the point.

Spent the afternoon in Tokyo at the Ainu Cultural Exchange Center. They have a small display area when you walk in but the best part was the extensive library they had.

Green car Nozomi is so comfortable. Why can’t Britain have things like this? Why can’t we have comfortable and quiet high speed rail? Why must we put up with rickety trains that are never on time that run on 200 year old tracks? Not to mention the manners of the passengers…

The prices are absolute robbery! They were playing Legends Arceus music over the speakers, but the original Diamond & Pearl contest music came on just before I left. Kinda nostalgic. I’m at a point where I don’t recognise a lot of the Pokémon they show off. Makes me feel old

Spent the rest of the day after Tōji at Kyoto Museum. The archaeology section was incredibly interesting as they had a flame vase from the Jomon period on display as well as a couple dōtaku bells and haniwa from later on. Also bought myself a Kami dictionary at the gift shop.

The height of the towers was inspired by Touji (東寺) the East Temple, a five-storey pagoda which still stands today as one of the tallest in Japan, & another temple, Saiji (西寺), the Western Temple, built in the west as a counterpart but burned down twice and was never rebuilt.

Aside from an English audio guide that gave brief highlights, it was all Japanese. I understood way more than I thought I would, and I ended up having a nice talk at the end of my visit with one of the staff.

Spent most of the afternoon at the Kanji Museum. They have a huge wall of kanji where you can pick out the ones in your name, if you use them. They also had 2020’s kanji of the year.

Was lucky enough to get a late checkout. Just about to leave, but not before getting a Marufukuro keychain.

I see their grass has grown in nicely since the last time I was here. Security guard moved out of the way so I could take a photo. Was going to give him a wave but he didn’t look at me long enough for me to be friendly lol

I remember standing on this very street eight years ago. At the time, the older office didn’t have the racetrack around the logo, and the other development building had just been built.

Was going to have a brief outing to go see the other Nintendo buildings again but it’s pouring with rain so I don’t really want to go. Might be a good chance to go out and get my own umbrella though while I have the chance to use one of the hotel ones.

Breakfast at Marufukuro. There was a Western menu, a Japanese menu, and an a la carte menu. You could mix and match from all of them as breakfast was a fixed cost. I had a pancake with sugar butter and what is probably the world’s thickest toast ever.

My room is nice and big. In a building that was used as a Yamauchi as opposed to a warehouse or new build. Number plates above the doors are original but the numbers are new. Outside it is what used to be a place to was your feet and such but it now houses the AC unit.

I had a long bath last night before an amazing sleep. Here’s a photo I took after dinner of a mosaic in the dining lounge. It originally came from a bathroom elsewhere in the complex.

There’s complimentary drinks and snacks both in the lounge and the room. If you drink alcohol you could really get your money’s worth by drinking the in-room champagne and saké. The library also has a whiskey bar.

Currently in the dining lounge. Unfortunately dinner wasn’t on today as the people who made reservations before arriving all cancelled which means that the restaurant is shut. But there’s a light meal menu starting at 9pm. Might have a bite then go up for a late night bath.

They have this neat Lego diorama of the hotel in the downstairs lounge. I’ve also been given a passcode for the upstairs library. Will probably take a look there too before an early check in. I’m a bit tired so I can’t be bothered to go out anywhere right now lol

Some red tape at the Ward Office this morning means that I can’t register my residency in Japan just yet. Hopefully that doesn’t cause any problems when I re-enter the country in a couple weeks. Anyway, I’ve finished with my company for the time being, and now I’m in Kyoto.

Everyone is still remote working so I don’t know how many people I’ll see to begin with, but I hope I get the chance to spend more time with my new colleagues so I can get to know them more.

HR took me to the realtors today and helped me get a flat. 1LDK is smaller than what I was aiming for but it’s a new build and comes with AC and free Internet. Also had dinner with a few people from work. There’s 27 people in my department (including me 28). Everyone’s very nice.
