Yup, makes more sense to look at segments individually (to test for reassortments) - unless you have reason to believe recombination could have occured (we see very little / no evidence for that in our 2015 paper)
Until there might be some functional studies it looks less interesting to me. Yes, the L and S segment phylogeny have shifted slightly, which could be an inner-LASV reassortment, but it's all still well within LASV strains, suggesting nothing unusual yet
I’m not suggesting there’s anything functional going on here, only that being a reassortant - given the geographical range of the virus - is interesting.
