Looking at the numbers from the RECOVERY trial yesterday, there's a hint of exactly this effect in the data - the rate ratio is 1.22 [0.86 - 1.75] for mild disease* (so increased risk of death) vs 0.65 [0.48 - 0.88] for vented patients (so decreased risk of death).

My understanding is steroids might be indicated later in disease, well past peak of viral replication, for this reason.

No he didn't. You don't have to like Trump but you can't twist medical facts to suit your preferences. HCQ doesn't knock out your immune system like Dexa, you can take it prophylactically in small doses or early in the disease.
